Finely carved in boxwood, this tactile netsuke takes the form of an abalone shell, its gently domed surface naturalistically rendered. Resting upon and around the main shell are three smaller clams, carefully composed to create a pleasing balance.
The carving displays a confident handling of form, the himotoshi are discreetly incorporated into the composition, maintaining the integrity of the design while ensuring functionality.
The surface has developed a rich, warm patina, highlighting the carved details. Evident wear consistent with age and handling enhances the piece’s tactile appeal, a hallmark of well-loved netsuke.
Shell subjects were favoured in netsuke carving for their natural forms and associations with the sea, often symbolising prosperity and good fortune.
