14. Lacquer Box

A large circular lacquer and basketwork box and cover, the top decorated in green and red lacquer, showing a peacock and peahen among peonies issuing from rockwork. The curved basket weave of deep rich patination, the interior and base in black. This form of box is thought to have been used for presentation of fine silk robes, and is in remarkable condition.
