77. Iron Bats (Kugikakushi)
Japan. Circa 1800 or earlier.


An extremely rare group of iron nail covers, or
Kugikakushi, in the form of bats in flight. These
ornamental fittings, beautifully worked with chased fur
whiskers and gilt eyes, generally made for use in
Temples.
