13. Pair of LanternsChina, 18th Century

A pair of Zitan wood lanterns, rectangular forms,
each set with four reverse glass European subject
panels variously depicting a European in
conversation with a Middle Eastern gentleman
beside a hound, a bridge, before buildings and
landscapes. Another, with two further Western
figures on a riverbank, and the third panel of a male
and female in conversation, before a buffalo. The
fourth, depicting a figure holding a telescope
before buildings and trees. The second lantern, with
figures on riverbanks, before castles and churches.
Both lanterns fitted with a hinged door, within
boarders of stylised bats to each corner, flanked by
ruji heads, the necks and feet with pieced panels
inset with numerous small glass panels painted with
flower sprigs and geometric designs.
