59. A Carved Wood & Gilt Paint Figure
Japan 17 th Century.
Size. 9" (25cm).

A carved wood and gilt paint (Kindei) figure of
Nyoirin Kannon, in the position of royal ease, the
hair dressed into a high chignon and secured with a
diadem, the delicate face composed and serene,
with downward meditative gaze and the eyes inlaid
with crystal. Also known as the Buddha of Mercy,
holding a jewel for granting wishes.
